success rate

The Gauteng Department of Housing has recorded a high success rate in
transferring houses previously owned by the state into private ownership as
part of a process to promote homeownership in the province. The process which
started in Krugersdorp (Mogale City) on 15 June 1995 has resulted in 263 837
houses being transferred to the previously disadvantaged beneficiaries in
Gauteng.
The department recently returned to Mogale City's Kagiso township to hand
over 183 title deeds as part of MEC Nomvula Mokonyane's contribution to the
successes of the programme which has since benefited over 63 281 people across
the province since the beginning of current provincial government's term of
office in 2004.
Speaking after a door to door visit to hand over title deeds to deserving
beneficiaries MEC Mokonyane pointed out that the fact over 263 000 households
in the province are homeowners, in addition to the thousands who also benefited
through various housing subsidies, is a testimony that the provincial
government is succeeding in empowering disadvantaged communities and fighting
poverty in the province.
"The transfer process has been a success but not without challenges, in the
process the department dealt with family disputes. When we started we were
sitting with only 14 375 of disputed family cases and now I can confirm that we
have managed to resolve 11 119 of these disputes," said Mokonyane.
