and Children
5 December 2007
The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign
is an annual United Nations-endorsed campaign that begins on 25 November each
year and ends on 10 December. An increasing number of South Africans are
heeding the national call to fight against to eliminate the abuse of women and
children and all forms of gender discrimination. Although the level of
awareness of the 16 days campaign has grown tremendously in both urban and
rural areas, the abuse of women and children in the country remains
unacceptably high.
As part of activities planned for this period, the Deputy Minister of Arts
and Culture, Ms Ntombazana Botha will host a breakfast discussion session at
the Hilton hotel, Sandton on 7 December 2007, to discuss this important matter
further. The theme for the breakfast is Emancipation, Empowerment and Equality
of Women: One Step Forward, Two Step Backwards! A panel of prominent human
rights and gender equality activists has been selected to participate at the
breakfast session. Members of the media are invited to attend the
breakfast.
