The Mpumalanga Department of Local Government is continuing to implement the
Water for All Flagship and to resolve water backlog challenges in the province.
The department is determined to accelerate the provision of basic water
services and enhance delivery capabilities to all households by 2010. Several
projects are underway in the 2008/09 financial year for the department to roll
out basic water services projects. To date, water infrastructure projects
benefiting 139 675 households have been completed.
The department will provide institutional, project management and technical
capacities required for the effective roll-out of the water services and
infrastructure projects. Technical support is provided to all municipalities on
infrastructure projects. Expertise on project planning, project technical
reports, project design, project management, constructions, monitoring and
evaluation are some of the services the department will assist municipalities
through the Project Management Unit.
The province is moving full steam with rolling out the Water for All
Flagship. Seventeen municipalities have certified their backlog figures. The
total backlog of households in the province that are without adequate safe,
potable water is 258 555. By the end of December 2008 the department had
connected 57 105 households to safe water. Fifty percent of water purification
plants have been assessed in the province.
The department is also facilitating the roll-out of improved sanitation in
the form of properly serviced VIP toilets and septic tanks. The department
planned for the improvement of toilets for 18 000 households on VIP toilets and
serviced 33 595 VIP toilets and drained 1 169 septic tanks by the end of
December. The department also provides support for waste water treatment plants
and repair major defects and effect critical operation and maintenance in order
to alleviate sewer spillage and roll out bulk water provision to small rural
villages in the province.
