27 August 2007

The Mpumalanga Department of Local Government and Housing has received the
2007 South African Institute of Government Auditors (Saiga) Award as the
overall winner in the category for departments in the province. The awards are
in pursuit of excellence in departmental annual reports. Nationally the
Department of Local Government and Housing was placed sixth, from all national
and provincial departments.

The awards have been tailored according to similar projects and practices
worldwide. Saiga has been supported with the co-operation of the
Accountant-General and the Auditor-General. Mpumalanga was the only province
with no disqualifications while other provinces had a single Department
disqualified. This award means that the Department of Local Government and
Housing followed the principles of good financial reporting and has been
recognised for their efforts. The department's performance in the accounting
sector underscores its commitment to effective and accountable financial
reporting.

The Acting Head of Department, Cyril Dlamini says the award in an indication
of the amount of work that has been put in by members of the staff to ensure
the promulgation of the Public Finance Management Act and related treasury
regulations. "We will strive to make sure that next year we even beat the
national departments for this prestigious award," said Dlamini.

For its achievements the department received a framed certificate and a
trophy.
