educate on how to access housing
17 September 2007
The Department of Local Government and Housing has embarked on a campaign to
educate and increase awareness on housing related matters, especially to those
consumers who qualify for housing assistance from the government as well as
those who have taken occupation of their subsidised houses. The campaign is the
Housing Consumer Education Programme and it will be targeting existing
beneficiaries at this stage.
The education will cover some of the following areas: tenure options,
affordability and savings, housing finance, contracts, aftercare, HIV/AIDS and
housing and sanitation, health and hygiene.
The Department has seen it very critical that consumers be educated on basic
issues of accessing a home and some of the important life skills associated
with responsible home ownership, as it has become clear that most new
homeowners have not been given the necessary education. This education will
enable the homeowners to derive maximum benefit from their homes as well as
understand the issues that affect them.
