More farm workers in the Mpumalanga province continue to benefit from the
farm dweller housing assistance programme. Thirty-two (32) farm workers from
the farm Many Waters at the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality benefited from
this programme and have started to move into their new houses. The farm owner
did not want houses built for his workers within the farm. The Department of
Land Affairs provided land for the farm workers to have houses built for them
in Mmampimpane near Middelburg.
The provincial housing department together with the municipality is
continuing to search for land in all the municipalities to develop houses for
the citizens of this country so that they enjoy a better life. Farm workers
seem to think they are neglected and do not benefit from the wealth of this
country. The department, under the farm dweller delivery programme, approved 32
units, of which 30 have been completed and people have moved in.
The beneficiaries who now own the houses come from farms around Steve
Tshwete Municipality. Basic services like electricity and water have since been
connected to the houses. The municipality serviced the sites after land has
been acquired through the Department of Land Affairs for the provision of the
housing units. This programme has been designed to assist residents/people who
are residing on farms to access housing. It enjoys the very same subsidy
quantum as other housing instruments explored by the department. Twenty farm
workers have also received houses on a farm called Kwa-Mgreek near Thekwane
North in Nelspruit.
