Government efforts to deliver quality houses to deserving communities
continue to gain momentum. The Mpumalanga province will again honour housing
stakeholders for playing a significant role in housing delivery. It is time to
recognise the achievements made by all housing stakeholders in taking part in
building a better life for deserving, qualifying and affordable houses for
citizens. The Provincial Department of Housing in conjunction with the National
Department of Housing will award prizes for the best performing contractors,
woman builder, youth contractors, municipality and other housing stakeholders
in the built industry.
Contractors, housing institutions, local municipalities and non-governmental
organisations (NGOs) in twelve different categories will be awarded for their
sterling work in housing delivery. The categories include the best subsidy
builder of the year, the best non subsidy builder of the year, the best woman
builder of the year, community based organisation (CBO) of the year and the
best affordable housing developer of the year amongst others. The best
contractors will be receiving various prizes that will also include vouchers to
purchase building equipment.
Participants will be judged on the projects they have successfully completed
in their respective categories and the quality of work they have done. The
provincial event will eventually culminate in the National Govan Mbeki Housing
Awards later in the year. Govan Mbeki Awards is a name given to the awards in
honour of the late African National Congress (ANC) stalwart and father of the
country's former president, Thabo Mbeki. Participants are urged to visit the
three regional offices at Ehlanzeni (Nelspruit, Dan Jan Building), Gert Sibande
(Ermelo, 68 Fourie Street) and Nkangala (Witbank, Piet Korinhof offices) to
access forms for entering the competition. The closing date for the submission
of applications is 15 May 2009.
