Nkomazi Municipality
30 April 2009
Nearly 600 families are already benefiting from one of government's low cost
housing projects at Mbuzini in the Nkomazi Municipality in Mpumalanga. The
Provincial Housing Department has recorded big housing milestone at various
villages in the municipality as the project nears its completion. The project
that was approved in 2007 has seen two contractors sharing the work equally in
several villages. To date, 566 units have been completed and beneficiaries have
occupied them. The delivery was through the Department's Integrated Residential
Development Programme (IRDP). The nearly R40 million project was approved early
in 2007 and is expected to be completed soon.
The programme provides for planning and development of integrated housing
projects. Projects can be planned and developed in phases and provides for a
holistic development orientation. The first phase entails planning, land
acquisition, township establishment and the provision of serviced residential
and other land uses to ensure a sustainable community. The second phase
comprises the house construction phase for qualifying housing subsidy
beneficiaries and the sale of stands to non qualifying beneficiaries and to
commercial interests.
One of the beneficiaries, Phumzile Nyoni (31) who is a single parent has
commended the Departmentâs delivery with this project. The mother of six school
going children says she has been staying at her parents house until they
secured a stand for her in 2007 for the department to start building her a
house. Ms Nyoni is appreciative that she now can enjoy a peaceful sleep and
cherish the better life she's enjoying under this government. The unemployed
single parent relies on the child support grant she receives from government
for her children. The project will have 677 housing units after completion.
