Systems on severe weather
19 November 2007
Causes of natural disasters like fires, floods, heavy rains and cyclones are
to receive special attention at a Capacity Building Workshop on Early Warning
Systems on severe weather in Nelspruit. The Department of Local Government and
Housing in collaboration with the South African Weather Services have organised
the session to deal with these life threatening occurrences. The workshop
follows fires the province experienced recently and the launch of the
Provincial Disaster Management Advisory Forum.
The workshop will tackle the following issues:
* early warning system and its interpretation
* communication strategy between Mpumalanga Disaster Management and South
African Weather Services when severe weather is anticipated
* introduction of Provincial Disaster Management Advisory Forum to the
municipalities
* the Disaster Risk Management concept
* the National Disaster Management Framework regarding Disaster Management
Advisory Forum.
The Department has recently launched the province's Disaster Management
Advisory Forum (PDMAF). Its purpose is to provide a mechanism and develop a

activities with regard to disaster risk management issues. The workshop is
