Mpumalanga Health on cholera update

The total cumulative number of cholera cases recorded is 5 489 since the
outbreak was first detected in the in the province. Total number of deaths
confirmed is 30. The breakdown per municipality: Bushbuckridge 22, Mbombela
North five, Mbombela South two and Thaba Chweu one.

The number of people presenting in our health facilities on a daily basis
has also declined: they were 99 on Monday, 118 on Tuesday and 120 on Wednesday.
The total number of people currently admitted is 25.

Mbombela North remain the most affected area with 3 010 people seen there
over the period, followed by Bushbuckridge area with 1 700, Nkomazi 261,
Mbombela South 254, Thaba Chweu 216 and Umjindi 48.

Women remain the most affected constituting 63% of the affected people; and
people in the ages of 21-25 years shows the highest number, followed by those
between 26-30 years; 16-20 years, 11-15 years and the number of children below
five years is 365.

We are continuing with our intensive community mobilisation and health
education and it is important to always remind people about the importance of
basic health hygiene practices: wash hands before touching food, wash hands
after visiting a toilet, wash fruits and vegetables, prepare food in a hygienic
place and report early to a health centre if you suspect or experience
diarrhoea.
