Mpumalanga Health on cholera update

Cholera update in Mpumalanga

4 February 2009

The number of people that have presented with cholera in our health
facilities since it was declared in the province has risen to 4 469. The number
of confirmed deaths still stands at 26.

Although the cumulative number shows a daily increase, the daily head count
of people presenting has stabilised and remained below 200. On Sunday 116
people reported at various facilities, 126 on Monday and 186 on Tuesday.

This can be attributed to intensive mass mobilisation and health education
undertaken in affected areas. Mbombela North still shows a higher number
compared to all affected areas.

We still request our people at large to continue to adhere to basic hygiene
practices at all times, as this is a cornerstone of prevention of many
waterborne diseases.
