It has come to the attention of the Mpumalanga Department of Education that
there are faceless people who phone schools promising them that the department
in collaboration with well known institutions will be donating computers to
those schools.
They in turn, request a school to organise a hand over function and to
deposit an amount ranging from R1 000 to R40 000 for insurance of the
computers. To date, two schools around Nelspruit have received such calls this
morning.
In the event a school receives such a call, it is advised to take
particulars of these people and immediately open a case at the nearest police
station and contact the department accordingly.
Should there be schools that have suffered through this scam, let them
forward reports to the Department through the line function. This will enable
the department to ascertain the extent of the problem and to curb these scams
from defrauding schools.
