Department of Minerals and Energy launch integrated electricity
programme

7 April 2009

The Department of Minerals and Energy and Ntsiki Yethu Local Municipality
invite the members of the media to the Sod Turning ceremony. The objective of
this event is to launch the integrated electricity programme on Thursday, 9
April 2009 at Ntsika Yethu Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape.

The Department of Minerals and Energy’s mandate is to ensure that all South
African households would have had access to electricity by 2014. Eastern Cape
is one of the provinces earmarked for such developments, simply because it is
predominantly rural and poor.

The Intsika Yethu Local Municipality is situated in the Eastern Cape
Province, within the Chris Hani District Municipality and comprises of 23
wards. The landscape in most parts of the municipality is mountainous and the
density of the houses is sparsely populated, hence most areas are classified as
deep rural areas.

The number of un-electrified houses in the above mentioned local
municipality is estimated at 35,128 with an annual growth of one percent. The
municipality constitutes about 48 percent of the total district backlog of
73,096.

The event will take place as follows
Date: Thursday, 9 April 2009
Time: 10h00
