Role of the Private Sector within South African Health System at the launch of
the South African Health Review 2007, Cape Town
5 December 2007
The Health Systems Trust (HST) has in the past 12 years managed to stimulate
debate and dialogue about the health status of the country. It has also
provided empirical evidence of the health challenges, critical to assess
progress in the health sector.
The HST, through all of its work, including the annual publication of the
review, has assisted the Department of Health to build the national health
system of the country.
In her speech the Minister will address the following:
* The constructive role the private healthcare sector can play in
strengthening the national health system as outlined in the White Paper for the
Transformation of the National Health System as well as in the National Health
Act.
* How unjust and unethical it is for the per capita expenditure in the private
sector to be 7 to 8 times more than that of the public sector.
* How necessary it has been over the past years for the government to exercise
stewardship over the private health sector through a number of legislative
changes.
Note to editors:
The Minister will afford the media time to ask questions after her speech.
It can also be arranged for the Minister to grant interviews before the
programme starts, to assist the media to meet their deadlines.
The launch will take place at a cocktail function at The (BMW) Pavilion
Conference Centre, Waterfront from 18h00 to 20h00.
