40th anniversary of the first human heart transplant

The Life HealthCare Group will hand over the first Paediatric Rheumatic
Heart Disease Prevention Clinic, to be officially opened by the Minister of
Health Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang at the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town
on Monday at 11h00.
The clinic with two new Heart Scan Machines, costing R500 000 each, will
service a vanguard population of Langa and Bonte Heuwel, where incidents of
rheumatic heart diseases are high among children. The Minister will open the
clinic on behalf of the hospital, Western Cape Department of Health and
University of Cape Town Department of Medicine.

Venue: E Floor, Klein Schuur Block, New Groote Schuur Hospital, Observatory,
Cape Town
This will be followed by the opening of a new Heart Transplant Museum at
17h00, to mark the 40th Anniversary of the first Human Heart Transplant
performed at Groote Schuur Hospital in 1967. The evening event, to be attended
by the Health Minister, will start with a walk through the museum at F Floor,
Old Building of the Groote Schuur Hospital from 17h30 to 18h30, followed by a
Gala Dinner, where two Chris Barnard Foundation Medallions will be
presented.
