M Tshabalala-Msimang to open annual AIDS meeting, 12 Jun

Health Minister to open annual meeting of The U.S. President's
Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (PEPFAR)

10 June 2006

The media is invited as follows:
Time: 8 am
Date: Monday 12 June 2006
Venue: ICC, Durban

The media is invited to a breakfast meeting where the Minister of Health Dr
Manto Tshabalala-Msimang will address the international community on the need
to increase funding for universal access to HIV and AIDS prevention, care and
treatment.

The Minister will speak at 8 am.

According to United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), more than 20
billion US dollars is needed annually to support efforts towards universal
access by 2010, particularly in low and middle-income countries.

Representatives of poor-resourced African countries, including Uganda,
Ethiopia, Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi and others will discuss ways of
closing existing resource gaps in their countries. Also to participate in this
discussion is Executive Director of UNAIDS Dr Peter Piot.

This gathering comes shortly after the United Nations high level meeting in
New York to review global progress response to HIV and AIDS. An inadequate
resource facing developing countries was identified as one of the
challenges.
