M Tshabalala-Msimang to host World Heart Day, 30 Sept

Team up for healthy hearts on World Heart Day 2007

25 September 2007

Obesity, poor diets, smoking and physical inactivity are the leading causes
of heart disease and stroke and are now being seen at an alarmingly high rate.
New figures show that overweight persons are three to five times more likely to
suffer a heart attack or stroke before they reach the age of 65 than people
with a normal weight.

Because people are increasingly leading unhealthy lifestyles, World Heart
Day, which takes place on Sunday, 30 September 2007, will focus on Heart
Disease. World Heart Day is organised by the Department of Health in
provinces.

Educational activities are organised countrywide on that day so everyone can
get involved and join in one of the walks, runs, jump rope or fitness sessions,
have a health check or learn about heart-healthy lifestyles from the Minister
of Health, Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, and KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Health, Ms
Neliswa Nkonyeni.

The event will be preceded by the official opening of Otimati clinic in the
area of kwaMaphumulo.

Journalists and Reporters are invited to attend the National event to mark
the World Heart Day to take place as follows:

Date: 30 September 2007
Time: 10h00
