Game Reserve

Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa will on Tuesday, 17 April 2007, inspect the
completed first phase of the Dinokeng Game Reserve and surrounding tourist
attractions.
The 13 000 hectares (ha) area of Gauteng's new game reserve has been
established combining game viewing with a variety of activities. Dinokeng is an
initiative of the Gauteng Provincial Government to establish a premier tourist
destination based on nature, culture and historical attractions close to the
urban areas of Johannesburg and Tshwane.
Part of the Gauteng Provincial Government's Blue IQ programme, Dinokeng is
one of four projects aimed at boosting tourism in the province. A flagship
programme of the Gauteng Department of Economic Development, Blue IQ aims to
deliver strategic economic infrastructure to catalyse sustainable economic
growth and to contribute to job creation in Gauteng. Dinokeng thus has the
mandate of promoting economic growth, socio-economic development and social
upliftment, particularly of the historically disadvantaged communities living
in the area. This is balanced with the conservation and promotion of the
abundant natural, historical and cultural heritage of the region.
The start-up phase of Dinokeng has already been completed and the reserve
fenced-off and stocked with game to the value of R7,9 million, creating a total
of 340 jobs. The reserve will offer overnight accommodation, 18 sites, two
restaurants and abundant activities including game drives, elephant rides,
horse riding, hiking, quad biking and balloon rides. The next expansion of the
Dinokeng Game Reserve is at an advanced stage and is expected to be completed
toward the end of the year.
Premier Shilowa will be undertaking an inspection of the fenced-off area of
the Dinokeng Big Five Game reserve and surrounding area by helicopter after
which he will address guests and the media.
