Gauteng gets ready for Human Rights Day commemoration

15 March 2007

Thousands of Gauteng residents are expected to gather at the Cricket Grounds
next to George Thabe Stadium in Sharpeville for the commemoration of this
year's Human Rights Day on Wednesday, 21 March 2007. The event is organised
jointly by the Gauteng Provincial Government, Sedibeng District Municipality
and Emfuleni Local Municipality to remember and honour those who lost their
lives in the struggle for freedom.

"On this day we remember those who lost their lives in the struggle for
freedom and we celebrate a democratic South Africa founded on the values of
fundamental human rights for which they sacrificed," said Gauteng MEC for
Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Barbara Creecy.

Preparations for this event are now at an advanced stage. As part of the
build-up programme for Human Rights Day, various activities have been lined up
across the province, which include the cleaning of the Sharpeville Cemetery on
Friday, 16 March and Fun-Run Marathon on Sunday, 18 March 2007. Also on the
same day, a cultural dance project called the Ingoma/Mxino which is in line
with the department's Creative Industry Strategy aimed at developing creative
industries to maximize their contribution in the economy, will take place.

Premier Mbhazima Shilowa is expected to deliver the keynote address, while
several Gauteng MECs, Executive Mayor of Sedibeng District Municipality,
Mlungisi Hlongwane, councillors and other dignitaries are expected to
attend.

The celebration will include craft exhibitions of locally produced goods and
performances by popular local artists including PJ Powers, Ringo, Rebecca
Malope, and a local group called Ntjapedi.
