The MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Mr MB Sesele will be hosting the
provincial public hearings on the standardisation of geographical names in
Bloemfontein on 13 February 2009.
The purpose of the hearing is to present the Free State public with an
opportunity to raise concerns, ask questions and make recommendations regarding
the geographical names in the province.
Currently there are 1 536 geographical names with either incorrect spelling
names, multiple and duplicated names, offensive names and names that are not
officially recognised or corrupted names.
The above number represents the following district within the province:
Xhariep: 258
Thabo Mofutsanyana: 492
Motheo: 198
Lejweleputswa: 371
Fezile Dabi: 217
The theme for the provincial hearing is "Building an inclusive nation
through standardisation of geographical names."
