Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana praises Road Freight Wage
Agreement

16 April 2009

Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana today (Thursday) congratulated road
freight employers and their truck-driver employees for reaching an agreement on
wage and other employment benefit adjustments.

The agreement, which has brought to an end an eight-day strike, resulted
from an intense Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration
(CCMA)-brokered bargaining process which the minister had put in place in
response to requests by the parties for his intervention.

"I am delighted to note that collective bargaining has once again proved
itself as the most effective tool for resolving any differences in the
workplace. I therefore wish to congratulate the two parties for successful and
meaningful talks. I am told the outcome entails a two-year renewable agreement,
and hope this pragmatic exercise sets the tone for any future negotiations," he
said.
