Rural folks to celebrate skills empowerment success

23 January 2007

The coming weekend will be a special one for the rural Mamone community of
Limpopo as they will be celebrating the success of a skills empowerment drive
that has seen 390 of them obtain valuable business and agriculture-related
skills, thanks to the Department of Labour.

The R500 000 project which was funded and launched by Labour Minister
Membathisi Mdladlana in January 2006 forms part of the government's job
creation and poverty alleviation campaign.

On Saturday, 27 January, Minister Mdladlana will be among the guests of
Chief Mampuru Sekwati as the Mamone Tribal Authority will be celebrating the
achievement of eight different priority projects that have helped contribute to
the area's economic growth.

All the 390 trainees have been successfully placed in the projects in which
they were trained on skills including marketing management, pottery, beading,
fertilisation and clothes manufacturing.

Of the number, women, at 335 constitute the highest number (86 percent) of
beneficiaries while the youth represents 51 percent, with the disabled forming
1,03 percent.
