M Mdladlana to address Thuthuka graduation ceremony, 10 May

Five years on Accountancy Skills Project empowers even
more

7 May 2007

The Thuthuka Education Upliftment Project, which over the past five years
has helped Accounting students from disadvantaged backgrounds improve in their
studies, will this week be churning out yet another group of successful
undergraduate students.

The graduation ceremony for the 50 students, who graduated from the
University of Fort Hare, is being held in Johannesburg on Thursday, 10 May and
will be graced with the presence of Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana who
will deliver a keynote address. The Thuthuka Project has come a long way since
its inception at the Fort Hare University in 2002 and has since expanded to
Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal provinces.

Funded by the Department of Labour through the Finance, Accounting,
Management Consulting and other Financial Services (FASSET) Seta to the tune of
over R100 million across the three provinces to date, the project has assisted
close to 50 000 individuals in various capacities, including 69 disadvantaged
students who have enhanced the dream of joining the world of chartered
accountants across the three provinces.

Thuthuka is operated in partnership with the South African Institute of
Chartered Accountants and in alliance with the University of Johannesburg. It
has helped set up the necessary structures to deliver an appropriate Bachelor
of Commerce Accounting degree to help graduates overcome the challenge of
having to complete bridging programmes before being eligible for the degree or
equivalent qualification. Part of the programme entails the placement of
students with firms during university holidays.

The Thuthuka Bursary Fund was launched in 2005 with 123 students at the
University of Cape Town, the University of the Witwatersrand and the University
of Johannesburg.

The graduating students come from the Thuthuka Schools Programme which helps
Accounting pupils obtain early necessary assistance to make it easier for them
to cope at tertiary level.
