Female farmers organised under the banner of the Limpopo Women in
Agriculture and Rural Development (LIWARD) throughout the province will meet at
Karibu Lodge to discuss progress which their organisation had made so far in
uplifting and developing women in the sector during their Annual General
Meeting (AGM). An annual report will be presented at the AGM. Spearheading the
AGM will be women such as, the 2007 Provincial and National Female Farmer of
the Year, Mme Makgoro Mannya who is also the Vice-Chairperson of the National
Women in Agriculture and Rural Development (WARD).
Background
WARD was born in 2006 as a vehicle to promote the advancement of women in
the agricultural sector. It targets female farmers from rural areas; its main
objective is to advance the role of women in rural development and the
agriculture economy. Subsequently, provincial WARD structures were formed and
the Limpopo chapter is called LIWARD.
Since its inception LIWARD has been able to provide women with a platform to
dialogue on issues affecting them in the rural areas as well as in the
agricultural sector; harness and develop skills and abilities of women to
participate in agriculture. It also influences policies which will benefit
women in the agricultural sector and nurtures cooperation amongst women
involved in farming and rural development. In the main, LIWARD aims to ensure
that women in Limpopo province become drivers of the economy.
Speakers at the event will include Hosi Philia N'wamitwa II who will deliver
a motivational speech and the MEC for Agriculture, Mme Dikeledi Magadzi will
