Limpopo Department of Agriculture (LDA) hands over the
revitalised Mbahela Irrigation Scheme to farmers

27 March 2009

The Limpopo Department of Agriculture will hand over the revitalised Mbahela
Irrigation Scheme to beneficiary farmers at Mbahela village in the Thulamela
Municipality within the Vhembe District. The scheme forms part of the 490
hectare Tshiombo Irrigation Scheme cluster which covers Maraxwe, Tshiombo and
Mbahela areas. The Tshiombo Irrigation Scheme farmers are well known for being
the first ever emerging farmers to produce and register their own certified
maize seed.

The scheme was rehabilitated under the Limpopo Department of Agriculture
Rehabilitation of Small-Holder Irrigation Schemes (RESIS) programme. The
Mbahela Irrigation Scheme is the first phase of the rehabilitation programme
within the Tshiombo irrigation cluster.

A total of 101 hectares has been rehabilitated and a fully automated and
computer managed floppy irrigation system has been installed. The
rehabilitation will benefit 86 farmers who are members of the scheme. The
department will soon finalise the rehabilitation of the entire Tshiombo
Irrigation Scheme cluster through the RESIS programme.

The MEC for Agriculture Mme Dikeledi Magadzi will hand over the
infrastructure to farmers.
