Pretoria: The Minister of Agriculture and Land Affairs met with all the
farmers' unions in the agriculture sector to discuss issues of rural crime
recently raised by the Minister. The unions met by the Minister were AgriSA,
National African Farmers' Union (NAFU) SA and Transvaal Agricultural Union
(TAU).
The Minister took note of the concerns raised by organised agriculture. The
Minister clearly stated that it was never her intention to accuse all the
farmers, but in fact stated her opinion that the majority of the agricultural
sector adhere to good farming practices. However, the Minister reiterated that
there were still human rights abuses at the farms.
She also stated that she sees her role as one who has to address issues in
the agricultural sector comprehensively; and it is therefore, her prerogative
to speak on matters she deems important.
AgriSA made a written presentation to the Minister, which was also explained
during the meeting. Certain proposals were made to the Minister about the way
forward, which the Minister undertook to evaluate and respond to.
The Minister also took note of the consensus between AgriSA and NAFU SA as
expressed in a joint media statement released earlier.
TAU tabled a written submission and the Minister undertook to respond to
it.
In conclusion, the Minister reiterated the commitment to the sector plan and
the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by AgriSA and NAFU SA. She also
requested trust from all involved. The meeting will be followed by future
interactions and consultations.
