Agriculture (AgriBEE) empowerment project, 20 Feb

Launch of the centre of excellence for emerging black
farmers

17 February 2009

The Minister for Agriculture and Land Affairs, Honourable Lulu Xingwana,
invites members of the media to the launch of the AgriBEE empowerment project
to be held in Heidelberg, near Johannesburg on 20 February 2009. The event
starts at 09h00.

This one-off multimillion rand investment project is a partnership between
black emerging farmers represented by the National African Farmers Union, Women
in Agriculture and Rural Development and Youth in Agriculture and Rural
Development and the white commercial farmers. Its main objective is the
transfer of skills from commercial farmers through training, mentorship and the
establishment of sustainable commercial farms for emerging black farmers. After
the launch the empowerment group is expected to run the centre as a business
unit.

The centre will kickstart its training in dairy farming and piggeries and
later on advance to other enterprises such as vegetable and crop farming.
