The allegations that 17 000 candidates in KwaZulu-Natal have not received
their results are totally devoid of all truths. In total the number of
candidates that have not received their results is ±1 500. The only outstanding
results are those which fall under categories of irregularities. Under these
categories there are different groups:
Group 1: allegations of group cheating
These candidates were invited, through their school managers, to come and give
evidence or write statements in their districts on 5 and 6 January 2009. This
process is underway.
Group 2: crib notes cases
These are candidates who were found with crib notes at examination centres or
crib notes were found in their scripts at marking. They have been invited to
districts for investigation on 8 January 2009 to write statements.
Group 3: technical irregularities (more than 1 000)
These are candidates who wrote subjects for which they did not register e.g.
mathematical literacy instead of mathematics. We are in the process of
releasing the results for those candidates. Under this group we also have
candidates who did not write examination numbers in their scripts. Some wrote
cell phone numbers. We are investigating these cases. There are also candidates
who failed to produce proof that they had registered to write to exam but
demanded to sit for the examination.
It is envisaged that all irregularity cases will be finalised by 30 January
2009. It is a requirement of Umalusi that these cases be dealt with on
case-by-case bases. The finalisation of this process also depends greatly on
the full co-operation from candidates.
