action
1 June 2007
The Department of Health in KwaZulu-Natal has observed the strike action by
unions today and hopes that this will come to an end soon. Unions must take
responsibility for any disruption of services and inconvenience to patients and
members of the community who visited health institutions throughout the
province today.
Sadly, in some reported instances some of the essential services staff
members also joined the strike - a direct violation of the government policy
preventing them from embarking on the industrial action. Although there were
some incidents reported, work has continued with success in most of our
institutions, with our employees ensuring that the lives and welfare of our
patients is not compromised.
The department wishes to thank those staff members who were able to hold the
fort at clinics and hospitals today while the strike action was on. The
department is closely monitoring the strike action and will implement all
necessary interventions to ensure that there is proper delivery of service at
all times.
