K Motlanthe on national elections date 2009

President Motlanthe signs a proclamation calling and setting a
date for the election

President Kgalema Motlanthe has today, 12 February 2009, issued a
proclamation declaring 22 April 2009, as a date on which national elections
will be held.

The President announced the date of the election on Tuesday, 10 February
2009, in Parliament during his reply to the State of the Nation Debate and
stated that the proclamation shall be made at a later date.

The proclamation has been issued in terms of the provisions of section 49(2)
of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, read with section 17
of the Electoral Act, 1998 (Act No. 73 of 1998).
