President Kgalema Motlanthe to address the World Conference on
Constitutional Justice

President Kgalema Motlanthe will tomorrow, 23 January 2009, deliver a
keynote address at the official opening of the World Conference on
Constitutional Justice at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

The conference, with the theme "Influential Constitutional Justice, its
influence on society and on the development of a global jurisprudence on human
rights" is hosted by the Constitutional Court of South Africa in a co-operative
effort with the Venice Commission.

The gathering will provide a platform to exchange ideas on constitutional
matters and jurisprudence. Issues expected to be discussed include:

* independence and accountability of the judiciary
* "interference" in and the exertion of improper pressure on the work of the
courts from public representatives, the media and members of the public.
* the advancement and importance of human rights in our communities and
* the impact of constitutional court judgments on society.
