K Mosunkutu meets Olievenhoutbosch residents

Mosunkutu engages with Olievenhoutbosch residents

2 March 2007

On Friday the community of Olievenhoutbosch had the chance to engage with
the MEC for Agriculture, Conservation and Environment Khabisi Mosunkutu on
issues pertaining to their community.

The purpose of the meeting, held on Friday, 2 March 2007, was to discuss and
evaluate existing poverty alleviation programmes and the local homestead garden
projects. The existing Homestead Food Garden Project benefits 500 community
members. Questions were also asked about other government services and how to
register for the annual Bontle ke Botho project.

"There is money to assist people who want to be farmers," said Mosunkutu. He
added that people have to be patient because the process takes time and there
are a lot of applications. Mosunkutu encouraged people to apply for funding for
their projects.

Mosunkutu discussed the development of agricultural projects, including the
establishment of agricultural hubs and other projects aimed at assisting
emerging farmers and disadvantaged communities. "Every piece of land needs to
be used maximally," said the MEC.

After the opening of legislature on 19 February, Mosunkutu said 10% of the
R19 million earmarked for the Comprehensive Agricultural Support Programme for
the coming financial year, is committed to the implementation of Women in
Agriculture and Rural Development (WARD) projects. Another R10 million is
earmarked for women empowerment in the provincial agricultural sector. Of the 6
000 homestead food gardens that we plan to help establish during the coming
financial year, the bias in terms of beneficiaries will also be towards
women.

It is outlined in the Gauteng Agricultural Developmental Strategy to develop
Gauteng's agricultural economies to attain its maximum potential and contribute
to the agricultural economy through job creation, poverty alleviation and
economic growth in the province. One of the challenges facing the community of
Olievenhoutbosch is the lack of adequate water provision. Mosunkutu assured
them that community taps will be installed after he has liaised with the
executive mayor of Tshwane, Gwen Ramokgopa, on the issue.

"Our aim is to improve service delivery because we are a smart province,"
said Mosunkutu.
