fire

The Gauteng MEC for Social Development Kgaogelo Lekgoro sends his
condolences to the family of the victims killed in a fire that broke out in
Arcadia, Pretoria today.

"It is sad that a life was lost in this tragedy. A life of one senior
citizen lost in a fire is one too many. We are thankful that the rest of the
occupants were evacuated in time and saved from the fire," said Lekgoro.

The fire at the Huis Kronendal Old Age Home broke out shortly after midnight
on Tuesday morning, in a room where an 84-year old female resident was
sleeping. The woman allegedly died of smoke inhalation but police are still
investigating. The other twenty residents of the old age home were treated for
minor injuries.

The MEC commends the staff at the institution as well as the fire and
emergency services department for the speedy response to the fire alert. He
said greater damage would have occurred and was averted because the fire was
managed in time.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
