18 March 2009
The Northern Cape Provincial MEC of Health, Mr J F van Wyk, cordially
invites you to the official Northern Cape Provincial World TB Day celebrations
event. The event will take place in the village of Tsineng, Moshaweng at the K
S Shuping High School in the John Taole Gaetsewe district (previously
Kgalagadi) of the Northern Cape province.
World TB Day is commemorated every year on 24 March when the bacterium that
causes tuberculosis was discovered on 24 March 1882. TB is a major cause of
illness and death worldwide, especially in Asia and Africa. South Africa ranks
fourth in the world with an incidence rate of 940 per 100 000 population. The
Northern Cape province ranks third highest in the country with a TB incidence
rate of 998 per 100 000 population during 2007.
The fight against TB, HIV, AIDS and sexual transmitted infection (STI)
cannot be the sole responsibility of one sector, department, ministry or
organisation. The aim of this event is to mobilise the community and all
relevant stakeholders to work more closely with the Department of Health and
the Northern Cape Provincial Government to deal with the challenge of TB in the
province.
Other dignitaries expected to accompany the MEC of Health are Members of the
Provincial Executive Council, Acting Director-General of the province, Speaker
of the Legislature, Members of the Provicial Legislatures (MPLs), Executive
Mayors and Mayors of the district and local municipalities, Provincial
Portfolio Committee members of health, representatives from the union sector
and private sector.
