MEC Jan Serfontein is in a mission to provide financial assistance to
Potchefstroom College of Agriculture students - call for sponsorship
In his relentless efforts to address the issue of non-payment of tuition
fees by some underprivileged students enrolled at the Potchefstroom College of
Agriculture, MEC for Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Environment,
Mr Jan Serfontein will raise funds for these students through a golf match, a
game of honesty and integrity scheduled for this Thursday, 26 March 2009, at
the Potchefstroom College of Agriculture, Landbou Golf Baan.
MEC's resolve to assist is subsequent to his meeting with parents of these
students in October last year, during which poor family background was singled
out as the main reason for the parents' inability to meet their financial
obligations. MEC Serfontein made a commitment from that meeting, to seek ways
and means of assisting students who are willing to work hard in their pursuit
to realise golden dreams of becoming agricultural professionals.
"They say the foundation of every government is the education of its youth.
I therefore call on stakeholders from all spheres of government to help us make
this a worthwhile commitment, and respond to our call to raise funds", urged
MEC Jan Serfontein.
The college has identified at least top ten students, who have in the past
academic year performed exceptionally well. Each of these students is expected
to pay R16 500 per annum towards their curriculum, but are sadly unable to pay
due to their poor family background.
"In partnering with stakeholders involved directly and indirectly in the
business of agriculture" emphasised MEC Serfontein, "I hope to afford these
deserving students a lifetime opportunity of qualifying in the field of
agriculture, for them to ultimately contribute towards the improvement of the
world economy and provide support and guidance on sustainable rural
development."
