taxi industry

Media statement

24 March 2009

Tshwane: Transport Minister Jeff Radebe has strongly condemned the violence
against the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system by the taxi industry in Johannesburg
today. The Minister has however maintained that the taxi industry remains the
nucleus of the BRT system.

Cabinet approved the BRT system in March 2007 to be part of the Integrated
Public Transport system. Government believes that implementation of the BRT
system will guard against the loss of legitimate jobs and income. The BRT
system is intended to transform the country’s public transport system to be
safer, reliable and efficient benefiting the majority of South Africans.
Government remains committed to working with taxi industry in finding a
workable solution for the taxi industry within the BRT system.

The Department of Transport acknowledges the constitutional right of every
citizen to express their concerns freely but lawlessness cannot be condoned
under any circumstances.

Minister Radebe has discussed the violent protests with Safety and Security
Minister, Nathi Mthethwa and investigations on the protests are underway. Those
who will be found guilty of contravening the law will face the full might of
the law. The Minister has reiterated that government's doors remain open for
further deliberations with all concerned parties.
