Media launch of the number plate recognition system and special
vehicles

3 April 2009

Mpumalanga Roads and Transport MEC Jackson Mthembu will be showcasing three
state of the art vehicles and a number plate recognition system to the media on
Tuesday, 7 April 2009 along the N4 road (Mataffin) next to Halls and Sons at
11h00.

The vehicles which are fitted with a system that can be able to record any
moving violation committed by a driver in his/her course of driving were
unveiled by Minster Jeff Radebe during the launch of the 2009 Easter Arrive
Alive Campaign in Ackerville on 23 March 2009.

The MEC will further unveil a minibus fitted with a number plate recording
system that is able to detect and release particulars of offences and
outstanding fines committed by the targeted vehicle. The system is linked to
the Electronic National Transport Information System (eNaTIS) and can reveal
all other vehicles which are registered in the name of the owner of the vehicle
scanned. It can further detect all the outstanding fines of other vehicles
registered in the name of the owner of the scanned vehicle.

30 new traffic vehicles will also be handed over to traffic officers as part
of enhancing law enforcement activities in the province.

The media will be given an opportunity to ride on the special vehicles and
observe how they operate. All media houses are therefore invited to be part of
the event.
