MEC Cele to open Black Umfolozi Bridge
20 February 2009
The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Bheki
Cele and the National Minister of Transport Mr Jeff Hadebe will on 24 February
(Tuesday) officially open the Othombothi Black Umfolozi Bridge, the event is set
to be at Thombothi High School at 09:00.
The construction of the bridge is to link the road over the Black Mfolozi
River for the Xasane and Esizinda communities in the Mahlabathini district that
had a major impact on a large community on both sides of the river. Opening of
the bridge is part of R1,5 billion that the Department of Transport has
invested in Zululand to deal with the infrastructure challenges.
Zululand is one of the areas in the province where people still travel
kilometres on foot to the nearest clinic, hospital, school, pension payout.
Therefore, we say as government we cannot allow a situation where teachers and
learners have to undress every day to cross rivers to school.
