As part of its 10th anniversary celebrations, the Electoral Commission (IEC)
will be hosting two youth events with the theme, 'Young People Reflect and
Speak Out.' The poetry evening will take place at the Carfax in Newtown on 30
of August while the Hip-Hop evening is schedule for the Voortrekker Monument on
31 August. Both events start at 18h00.
"The two events are an effort on the part of the IEC to create awareness
with young people about the IEC and its work as well as the different stages of
the electoral process by engaging them in activities they relate to. The events
will also provide the IEC with a platform through which to engage the youth
during the 10th anniversary celebrations, for young people to join in and
express themselves and of course, to celebrate with the youth the
accomplishments of the IEC the past ten years," said Sy Mamabolo, provincial
Electoral Officer for Gauteng and also co-ordinator for the 10th anniversary
celebration programme.
Both events will include speakers who will talk on issue pertaining to the
role and active participation of young people in the democratic processes of
our country.
The youth events form part of a calendar of events that started on 3 August
in Midrand with a lecture by Professor Barney Pityana. The rest of the calendar
