The Deputy Chief Electoral Officer of the Independent Electoral Commission
(IEC), Mr Mosotho Moepya, said today, 27 November, that the last municipal ward
by-elections for 2006 will take place on Wednesday, 6 December 2006. The
by-elections will take place in Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo,
Mpumalanga, North West and the Western Cape.
A total of 47 candidates, representing 11 political parties and seven
independent candidates, will contest 12 vacant wards. One of the wards is
uncontested.
In the Eastern Cape, ward nine in EC131, Inxuba Yethemba (Cradock) is
uncontested. Mlulami Otto Henge of the African National Congress is the only
candidate.
Five by-elections will take place in KwaZulu-Natal:
* Ward 20 in ETH, Ethekwini (Durban Metro) will be contested by Gcobani Mabija
and Sipho Mngadi, both independent candidates; Cyril Khanyisani Mvuni of the
African Christian Democratic Party; Marcus Sifiso Zungu of the African National
Congress and Daphney Jajile Gcabashe of the Inkatha Freedom Party.
* Ward 10 in KZ216, Hibiscus Coast (Port Shepstone) will be contested by
Victus Mxolisi Dladla of the African Christian Democratic Party; Princess
Sibongile Shusha of the African National Congress; and Bethuel Thembinkosi
Mqadi of the Inkatha Freedom Party.
* Ward four in KZ232, Emnambithi/ Ladysmith (Ladysmith) will be contested by
Themba Goodlord Jali of the African Christian Democratic Party; Siphiwe Petros
Nxumalo of the African National Congress; and Sithenjwa Aaron Miya of the
Inkatha Freedom Party.
* Ward 27 in KZ252, Newcastle (Newcastle) will be contested by Thembinkosi
Patrick Mbata of the African Christian Democratic Party; Nonhlanhla Alzinah
Msibi of the African National Congress; Simanga Phillip Xaba of the Azanian
People's Organisation; Bongani Raymond Thusi of the Independent Democrats;
Sithembiso Wilmot Mkhwanazi of the Inkatha Freedom Party; and Amos Sifo Gamede
of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania.
* Ward 13 in KZ292, Kwadukuza (Stanger) will be contested by David Perumal
Chetty and Rabiwath Singh, both independent candidates; Terence Oliver Munien
of the African Christian Democratic Party; Phumlani Bongumusa Zwane of the
African National Congress; Ranjith Singh of the Democratic Alliance; Vinesh
Jhagaroo of the Independent Democrats; and Soobramoney Reddy of the Inkatha
Freedom Party.
In Limpopo, the candidates for Ward four in NP334, Ba-Phalaborwa
(Phalaborwa) are Papani Eric Mathebula, an independent candidate; Richard
Ndlovu of the African Christian Democratic Party; Thompson Nkuna of the African
National Congress; Carmona Chivite Ngovene of the United Democratic Movement
and Nthombisotwa Gladys Mundlovu of the Ximoko Party.
Three by-elections will take place in Mpumalanga:
* Ward 26 in MP307, Govan Mbeki (Highveld Ridge) will be contested by
Sputnick van der Merwe, an independent candidate; Ntombikayise Gloria Khumalo
of the African National Congress and Sipho Joel Dhladhla of the Democratic
Alliance.
* Ward three in MP322, Mbombela (Nelspruit) will be contested by Elijah
Sipho Mthombeni of the African Christian Democratic Party and Lizzy Elizabeth
Nyalungu of the African National Congress.
* Ward 14 in MP322, Mbombela (Nelspruit) will be contested by Mshumayeli
David Mnisi of the African National Congress and Christiaan Johannes de Kock of
the Democratic Alliance.
In North West, the candidates contesting Ward 18 in NW383, Mafikeng
(Mafikeng) are Bius Neo Dikgomo of the African Christian Democratic Party;
Gaolatlhe Johnson Nkoane of the African National Congress; Moganetsi Henry
Morubane of the Democratic Alliance; Puleng Lydia Mokoena of the Independent
Democrats and Mosekiemang Petrus Nko of the United Christian Democratic
Party.
In the Western Cape, Ward 23 in WC023, Drakenstein (Paarl) is contested by
Johannes Casper Bezuidenhout, an independent candidate; Harlan Courtenay Alva
Cloete of the African National Congress; Miriam Maria Adriaanse of the
Democratic Alliance; Gert Cornelis Brits of the Independent Democrats and
Eleanore Jacqueline Basson of the Western Cape Community.
Voting stations will be open from 07h00 to 21h00. A total of 59 345 voters
are registered in the 12 wards (40 voting districts), where by-elections will
be taking place.
