The Deputy Chief Electoral Officer of the Independent Electoral Commission
(IEC), Mosotho Moepya, said today (3 December) that the last municipal ward
by-elections for 2007 will take place on Wednesday, 5 December 2007. The
by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and the Western
Cape provinces.
A total of 14 candidates will contest five (5) vacant wards. One (1) is an
independent candidate while the rest represent six (6) political parties. One
ward is uncontested.
Two by-elections will take place in Eastern Cape:
* Ward 49 in Nelson Mandela Bay (Port Elizabeth) â NMA will be contested by
Michele Mann of African Christian Democratic Party, Jurie Chessman Harris of
African National Congress, Stephen Aubrey Simon of the Democratic Alliance,
Errol Derick Joseph of the Independent Democrats, Haseline Magdeline van Vught
of the Social Democratic Party and Mogamat Sharkir Bardien of the United
Democratic Movement. The seat was previously held by the African National
Congress and the vacancy occurred due to the death of the councillor.
* Ward 1 in King Sabata Dalindyebo (Umtata) â EC157 will be contested by
Thami Mayaba an independent candidate, Notyatyambo Rose Gcingca of the African
National Congress and Monica Nokwanda Saliwa of the United Democratic Movement.
The seat was previously held by the African National Congress and the vacancy
occurred due to the death of the councillor.
Another two by-elections will also take place in Northern Cape:
* Ward 2 in Tsantsabane (Postmasburg) â NC085 will be contested by
Mosebiemang Jan Tonyane of the African National Congress and Anna Helena
English of the Independent Democrats. The seat was previously held by the
African National Congress and the vacancy occurred due to the termination of
the councillor's membership from the party.
* Ward 3 in Tsantsabane (Postmasburg) â NC085 will be contested by Matthews
Mothusiotsile Mogorosi of the African National Congress and Matthys Wilhelm
Christiaan Besselaar of the Independent Democrats. The seat was previously held
by the African National Congress and the vacancy occurred due to the
termination of the councillor's membership from the party.
In Western Cape, Ward 3 in George (George) â WC033 is uncontested. Theunis
Jacobus Botha of Democratic Alliance is the only candidate. The seat was
previously held by Democratic Alliance and the vacancy occurred due to the
resignation of the councillor.
Voting stations will be open from 7h00 to 21h00. A total of 22 203 voters
are registered in the five wards (11 voting districts) where by-elections will
be taking place.
