mourns the passing away of the Communications Minister
7 April 2009
The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has learnt
of and mourns the sudden passing away of the Communications Minister, Dr Ivy
Matsepe-Casaburri last night.
The Authority believes that Matsepe-Casaburri was instrumental in the
transformation of the South African communications industry at large. She took
the position of the Minister of Communications in 1999 and it was during her
tenure that South Africa saw a number of remarkable developments including the
licensing of the third mobile network operator, Cell C and the second network
operator, Neotel.
Matsepe-Casaburriâs involvement in the communications industry was not
restricted to South African borders. For that reason, she served as the
Chairperson of the Ministerial Oversight Committee of the African
Telecommunications Union.
Her contribution to the communications industry will forever be
cherished.
