The Deputy Chief Electoral Officer of the Electoral Commission (IEC), Mr
Norman du Plessis said today, 1 August that the next municipal ward
by-elections will take place on Thursday, 10 August 2006. The by-elections will
take place in the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, North West and the
Northern Cape.
A total of 22 candidates, representing 11 political parties, will contest
seven vacant wards.
In the Free State, Ward 12 in FS185, Nala, Bothaville will be contested by
Edward Molutsi of the African National Congress, Stephanus le Roux of the
Democratic Alliance (DA), Thom Mbangoa Mabaso of the Pan Africanist Congress of
Azania, Molefe Daniel Mokorutlo of the United Democratic Movement and Jacob
Pieter van den Berg of the Freedom Front Plus.
In KwaZulu-Natal, the candidates for Ward 19 in ETH, Ethekwini (Durban) are
Elizabeth Ann Nieuwenhuis of the African Christian Alliance, Cyril Khanyisani
Mvuni of the African Christian Democratic Party, Thulani Emmanual Gangile of
the African National Congress and Reginald Sithembile Jokweni of the National
Democratic Convention while Ward 7 in KZ234, Umtshezi, Estcourt will be
contested by Thokozani Vincent Mkhize of the African National Congress and
Mkhethi Petros Khanyile of the Inkatha Freedom Party.
In Mpumalanga, Ward 17 in MP307, Govan Mbeki, Highveld Ridge, will be
contested by Tolotsana Alfred Moekoa of the African National Congress and
Timothy Mark Denny of the Democratic Alliance. In the other by-election, Ward
two in MP313 Steve Tshwete, Middelburg will be contested by Andries Petrus
Myburgh Robberts of the African Christian Alliance, Nason Dlozi Cindi of the
African Christian Democratic Party, Nomvula Julia Nkambule of the African
National Congress and Madoda Gregory Amigo of the Greater Middelburg Residents
Association.
In North West, Ward 16 in NW402, Potchefstroom will be contested by Ofentse
Victor Sebetlele of the African Christian Democratic Party and Thabiso Barend
Mono of the African National Congress.
In the Northern Cape, the candidates for Ward four in NC092, Dikgatlong,
Barkley West are Shaun Jacco Brandt of the African Christian Democratic Party,
Jack Mweninjawa of the African National Congress and Montesque Nceba Jacobs of
the Barly West Task Team.
Voting stations will be open from 07h00 to 21h00. A total of 41 243 voters
are registered in the seven wards where by-elections will be taking place.
