IEC to hold municipal ward by-elections, 26 Sept

Municipal By-elections schedule

The Deputy Chief Electoral Officer of the Electoral Commission (IEC),
Mosotho Moepya, said today (17 September) that municipal ward by-elections will
take place in the Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, North West and the
Western Cape on Wednesday, 26 September 2007.

A total of 27 candidates will contest nine (9) vacant wards. One (1) is an
independent candidate while the rest represent 10 political parties.

In the Free State, Ward 4 in Nketoana (Reitz) Municipality – FS193 is
uncontested. Jabula Roy Msimanga of the African National Congress is the only
candidate. This ward was previously represented by the African National
Congress and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.

Two by-elections will take place in Moqhaka (Kroonstad) Municipality –
FS201, also in the Free State. Ward 8 will be contested by Ntsokolo Derkie
Jankie of the African Christian Democratic Party, Pakiso Monica Mohlolo of the
African National Congress and Maria Makoli Ramongalo of the African People's
Convention while the candidates for Ward 12 are Papali Lineo Petronella
Setiloane of the African Christian Democratic Party, Thomas Lemperoame Makau of
the African National Congress and Seuli Edwin Liphooko of the African People's
Convention.

Both wards were previously represented by the African National Congress.
Ward 8 became vacant due to the death of the councillor while the vacancy in
Ward 12 was caused by the resignation of the councillor.

In Gauteng, two by-elections will take place in the City of Johannesburg
(Johannesburg) – JHB.
* Ward 22 will be contested by Rilani Elisah Chabalal of the African Christian
Democratic Party, Tankiso Michael Fafuli of the African National Congress,
Sandile Ephraim Dloyi of the Azanian People's Organisation and Selina Nombulelo
Ntsibulane of the Operation Khanyisa Movement. This seat was previously held by
the African National Congress and the vacancy occurred due to the death of the
councillor.

* Ward 103 will be contested by Darrell Strydom of the African Christian
Democratic Party, Dunn Maphalala Mabunda of the African National Congress and
Vincent Lawrence Earp of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously
represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant due to the resignation
of the councillor.

In KwaZulu-Natal, Ward 4 in Impendle (Impendle) Municipality – KZN224 will
be contested by Sizwe Gladman Ndlela of the African National Congress, Thulani
Hezock Zuma of the Inkatha Freedom Party and Bongiwe Penelope Shelembe of the
National Democratic Convention. The seat was previously held by the African
National Congress and the vacancy occurred due to the death of the
councillor.

Two by-elections will take place in North West:

* Ward 16 in Rustenburg (Rustenburg) Municipality – NW373 will be contested
by Louisa Jacoba Susanna Wessels of the African Christian Democratic Party,
Lodewikus Johannes Reinecke of the African National Congress, Henry Charles
Hartley of the Democratic Alliance, Harry Adam Solomons of the Independent
Democrats and Izak Johannes Bisschoff of the Vryheidsfront Plus. The ward was
previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant due to the
resignation of the councillor.

* Ward 26 in Merafong City (Carletonville) Municipality – NW405 will be
contested by Mantu Magaret Dyonase of the African National Congress, Edward
Tukisi Ditlhakanyane of the Democratic Alliance and Deon Johan van Straaten of
the Vryheidsfront Plus. This ward was previously held by the African National
Congress and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.

In the Western Cape, Ward 6 in Bitou (Greater Plettenberg Bay) Municipality
– WC047 will be contested by Nombeko Eunice Kota of the African National
Congress and Memory Booysen, an independent candidate. This ward was previously
represented by the African National Congress and the vacancy is due to the
termination of services of the councillor.

Voting stations will be open from 07h00 to 21h00. A total of 57 072 voters
are registered in the nine wards (32 voting districts) where by-elections will
be taking place.
