South Africa celebrates World Post Day - Mpumalanga

5 October 2006

As part of the World Post Day celebrations, the Minister of Communication,
Dr Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri and the South African Post Office (SAPO)
representatives, will be visiting the community of Oshoek border post on
Monday, 9 October 2006.

At this event, the Minister is expected to officially hand over a portable
post office to this community as part of SAPO's portable post offices rollout
programme. She will also receive a letter from the Mayor of Mbabane, delivered
by 11 members of the Post Office Cycle Team during a 1 000 kilometre journey
starting in Mbabane, Swaziland.

According to the Director-General in the Communications Department, Ms
Lyndall Shope-Mafole, celebrating World Post Day, "is the ideal platform to
commit South Africa in meeting the indicative target in the "Declaration of the
World Summit on Information Society," Geneva 2005, to be achieved by 2015 that
is to connect public libraries, cultural centres, museums, post offices and
archives with Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs)."

With the theme for World Post Day 2006 being, "The post reaching everyone
everywhere," it will be fitting to present the role of the South African Post
Office as a global e-service network that is empowering and mobilising citizens
in every corner of South Africa and connecting them to the rest of the
world.

"We are pleased to empower the citizens of Oshoek border post, who will now
be afforded the opportunity to transact not only with the business world, but
also communicate with friends and family in South Africa and the rest of the
world. The South African Post Office is gearing up to put up a total of 20
portable post offices by the end of 2006 as a testament to our commitment to
prove that we are serious about ensuring we continue to reach and service the
country's needs, particularly those citizens in remote areas of South Africa,"
says Khutso Mampeule, Group Executive, South African Post Office.
