The Gauteng MEC for Public Transport, Roads and Works, Ignatius Jacobs, will
visit the two Drivers Licence Testing Centres (DLTCs), which were established
early last month in an attempt by the department to resolve the backlog problem
in DLTCs around Gauteng.
In 2004 the Gauteng Shared Services Centre (GSSC) was tasked to establish a
centralised call centre booking service that would enable the public to call a
single 086 telephone number. The intended goals of centralised booking as
implemented at the GSSC are to:
* increase customer convenience
* eradicate licensing related fraud and corruption
* improve learner and driver licensing related revenue management
* create an efficient operating and management environment in DLTCs.
Over the past few years, the demand for licences has increased phenomenally
and testing stations found it difficult to cope.
Following Premier Mbhazima Shilowa's commitment to resolve the backlog in
DLTCs, the department initiated a Backlog Clean-Up Project that saw the
establishment of three satellite DLTCs at Funda Centre in Soweto, Ormonde and
Kempton Park. These satellite centres became fully operational on 18 September
2007.
Reports show that 1 498 applicants received service at Funda Centre within
nine days of operating and about 1 228 applicants at Ormonde in six days.
"We are confident that the department will resolve the challenges
experienced by DLTCs around Gauteng. This project demonstrates that the Gauteng
Provincial Government is committed to eradicate this backlog," said Jacobs.
