I Jacobs to donate bicycles to learners in Imbizo Week, 27 Oct

Transport Department gives R1 million for bicycle project in
Gauteng

26 October 2006

Gauteng MEC for Public Transport, Roads and Works, Mr Ignatius Jacobs, and
the Executive Mayor of the West Rand Municipal District, will donate
seventy-five bicycles to learners, at 11h00, on 27 of October 2006, at the
Muldersdrift Multipurpose Sports Complex. This is part the of R1 million Shova
Kalula Bicycle Project that will be rolled out in all Gauteng municipalities,
henceforth. The project, under the auspices of the national Department of
Transport, is targeted at learners who, on daily basis, have to travel
distances longer than five kilometres on their way to school, especially in
areas that are not covered by the subsidised bus system that is being run by
government.

Part of the project will entail the construction of special cycling paths
along the roads in identified areas in the province as a means of ensuring the
safety of cyclists in general. Such construction has already started in
Atteridgeville, in the City of Tshwane.

Speaking ahead of the event, MEC Jacobs said, "As government and the
community of our province, we are excited about this initiative as it gives us
the opportunity to further help in building tomorrow's leaders.

"The bicycle project will bring accelerated access to places of learning,
and contribute to the safety of our children on the roads. In the long run, our
country will reap the benefits of such good investment in the future of our
youth, through the development of healthy, skilled and productive people".

Fifteen learners who have already been trained on road safety will be part
of tomorrow's event.
