chapter 9 and associated institutions
22 August 2007
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) welcomes the report of the
ad hoc Committee released on Tuesday, 22 August 2007. In the course of its
deliberations, the commission made substantive submissions to the ad hoc
Committee.
The commission notes with pleasure that many of the issues it has raised
with the Erstwhile Committee have been adequately addressed. To this end, the
commission commits itself to actively contributing to the implementation of the
recommendations ensuing from the report.
In particular, the commission supports a review of the South African Human
Rights Commission Act, and the recommended operative structural modifications
encompassed in the report. The commission is of the view that implementation of
the recommendations will ensure that it is able to advance its work as a
champion of human rights in line with its constitutional, social and ethical
mandate.
The recommendations will undoubtedly enhance the commission's own work in
creating a dynamic institution both, nationally and within the global
arena.
