Health on Democratic Alliance (DA) motion in Parliament

Health Ministry welcomes the rejection of the DA motion

18 October 2007

The Ministry of Health welcomes the motion adopted by parliament this
afternoon expressing full confidence in the leadership of the Minister of
Health, Manto Tshabalala-Msimang.

Parliament further rejected the Democratic Alliance (DA) motion which called
for the appointment of an ad hoc committee to investigate whether the Minister
of Health is fit to hold office. All parties rejected the DA motion except for
the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) and Freedom Front.

This is yet another failed attempt by the DA to undermine the integrity of
the Minister and the progress that government is making in improving the health
of the South African population. The DA motion was blatantly opportunistic,
irrelevant to activities of parliament and most importantly
unconstitutional.

The Ministry of Health remains committed to work with all partners to ensure
that all the people of South Africa progressively realise the right of access
to quality healthcare and will continue to account to parliament on all health
programmes aimed at achieving this goal.
