At the previous media briefing held on 6 September 2007, it was stated that
South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) has advised the Department of Health
to take precautionary measures and to quarantine certain batches of condoms
while SABS continues its investigations.
This included all condoms produced by Kohrs Medical. All investigations have
now been completed. The results are that apart from LSP/Zalatex, one other
manufacturer, Kohrs Medical, was found not to meet the expected stringent
standard. Consequently the SABS Mark permit for Kohrs Medical was suspended on
2 October 2007.
The affected condoms can be identified by the manufacturer's code 6809/MED
and in the case of LSP/Zalatex, 4308/ZLX that precedes the lot number on the
packaging. All persons are cautioned not to use these condoms. All other
condoms are cleared.
The SABS again emphasises that extensive controls and verifications have
been implemented throughout the testing and certification process to ensure
that all condoms supplied under the SABS Mark and under the Choice brand comply
with international standards. The highest standards will be maintained in the
testing of condoms in accordance with the World Health Organisation
standards.
